Historic Route
The historic route, where the Atlantic and the Tagus meet and where the past meets the present. Upon leaving Cascais Marina, we head East and begin a journey through time, discovering the history of Portugal. Ancient and contemporary. We said goodbye to the Estoril Coast and its fortresses, with a last look at the São Julião da Barra Fort, imposing, almost as if it exerted dominance over the very recent university building.
As we enter the Tagus riverbank, we notice the Algés control tower, tilted and inaugurated in 2001. Designed to control an extensive maritime and river area, the modern structure seeks to occupy its space, like other constructions. which throughout history were built on the riverfront, between the fortresses of the Tagus River and the Vasco da Gama bridge.
Further ahead, we see the Champalimaud Foundation, followed by the monument in honor of the Ultramar fighters and the Belém Tower, surrounded by decorations of the Coat of Arms of Portugal and full of implicit nationalism. 450 years of history, side by side. The Monument to the Discoveries, the Jerónimos Monastery, the Electricity Museum and again a modern building, the MAAT. Before we go back in time once again...
An endless number of monuments that remind us of the battles fought, the unavoidable moments in Portuguese history and the great achievements of Portugal.
